As Charlottesville wedding and engagement photographers, we of course love a good surprise proposal at UVA! But Cole and Grace’s proposal last month was extra special. Cole and Hunter spent more than a month working together to plan the perfect surprise engagement — and it showed! As Cole got down on one knee in one of UVA’s gardens, Grace was immediately overwhelmed with emotion. Her face said it all! Despite the August heat, her reaction was picture-perfect! But the surprises didn’t end there.

As with every surprise proposal couple, we spent the next 20 or 30 minutes wandering the Lawn, capturing some wonderful moments between Cole and Grace. They were clearly thrilled to be engaged, and to be taking the next step in their relationship! But what took their surprise proposal to the next level was what happened next. We said our goodbyes, as if the session was over. Then we sped off, right back to the spot that Cole got down on one knee. When he and Grace returned a few moments later (“I think I left my keys in the garden?”), they found their parents, grandparents, and siblings waiting for them! The hugs, champagne pops, and laughter that followed were almost as beautiful as the proposal itself. And we were even able to capture a few family portraits of the entire squad!
