I was hiding behind one of the columns on the University of Virginia’s Lawn. I could just barely see Meghan from my hiding place, and just past our totally unsuspecting bride-to-be was Sarah, her camera hidden beneath her jacket while she pretended to talk on the phone. William’s family was playing their part perfectly – lining up with their backs to the Rotunda for photo after photo. Then, we heard his brother yell “Okay, all the UVA grads in this one!”

 

This was our cue. As Meghan stepped into place, arm-in-arm with several others with their backs to the Rotunda, Will emerged from his hiding place and jogged up behind her. Just before he reached Meghan, his family parted ways like a synchronized swimming team to leave the two of them alone. Meghan’s surprise was evident, especially since Will was still supposed to be on-base in Texas at that very moment! As often happens during surprise proposals, Meghan’s surprise was soon replaced by tears of overwhelming joy, which were then replaced by laughter and lots of hugging and kissing. When it finally came time for their engagement mini-session, it didn’t take much coaxing to get Charlottesville’s newest engaged couple to laugh and dance and snuggle up on each other all across the Lawn.

What a joy it was to be surrounded by your friends and family on Saturday as you two took your first official step towards your life together! Meghan, I hope you know how many months of planning went into this proposal; William’s plans were already well under way when he reached out to us on New Year’s Day! From the sound of things, your engagement could be a challenging time with one of you teaching in Virginia and the other training in Texas, so we hope that these photos are a joyous reminder of your love and affection for your spouse-to-be as you plan your wedding and walk towards marriage – all from 1,000+ miles apart!
