“Is that them? I think that’s them” Sarah asked me with a mixture of excitement and nervousness in her voice. Her camera was slung over her back to make herself as inconspicuous as possible, hoping her camera strap would look more like a backpack from a distance.

 

“No, that guy is too blonde – he doesn’t look like the photo Jake sent me,” I replied. Since I had our 70-200 mm telephoto lens mounted on my camera, being unnoticed was essentially impossible, so I was hiding behind one of the tall white columns with questionable success. For the second time this week, we found ourselves on the Lawn at the University of Virginia, awaiting a young man to arrive with his girlfriend, only to leave with a fiance. Sarah and I were doing one of our favorite things in the world: capturing a surprise proposal.

 

My conversations with Jake leading up to this moment told me that he cared A LOT for his soon-to-be-fiance Suki. We had gone back and forth on almost a half-dozen potential spots in Charlottesville for the proposal, but ultimately we landed on the one that would mean the most to his UVA-grad girlfriend: right in front of the Rotunda.

Thank you both so much for letting us be a part of your special moment. We know firsthand the incredible blessing that marriage can be, and were overjoyed to see how happy the proposal made you both. Suki, your laughter was contagious, and brought smiles to all of our faces. Jake, the way you cared for Suki during the proposal and the photos that followed gave us a glimpse into the beautiful journey that you two are embarking on. We know that the marriage to come will be one that blesses you two, and everyone around you.
